If you have searched for social work at the UCs and come up empty, the search is not broken. Almost no UC offers it, and the one that does files it under a different name.
The short version: exactly one UC campus has an undergraduate social work degree, it is called Social Welfare, and if you are set on this field the CSU system is where most of the seats are. Here is the honest landscape.
Which UCs actually have social work?
One. UC Berkeley's Social Welfare, B.A. is the only undergraduate social work degree in the UC system. Berkeley admits into it as an upper-division major, which makes it a genuine transfer target rather than a freshman-entry program.
- Has an undergraduate degree: UC Berkeley only, as Social Welfare.
- Graduate social work only: UCLA and several other campuses run MSW programs with no undergraduate equivalent.
- No social work at any level for undergraduates: the remaining campuses, though most offer sociology, psychology and human development majors that feed into MSW programs later.
So "does UCLA have social work?"
Not for undergraduates. UCLA's social welfare program is a master's degree, and this is the most common misunderstanding in this search. You cannot transfer into social work at UCLA, because there is nothing to transfer into.
What UCLA and the other campuses do have is Sociology and Psychology, which are the standard feeder majors for an MSW. That path is longer on paper but extremely common in practice, and MSW admissions committees are used to it.
Can you actually get into Berkeley Social Welfare?
Berkeley Social Welfare is selective, but it is a different kind of selective than the campus's impacted STEM and business majors. It reviews for fit with the field alongside academics, which means relevant experience genuinely counts.
Practical version: volunteer or work in a human-services setting while you are still at your community college. Case-management, crisis-line, shelter, school-support or youth-program experience reads as real preparation. Applicants who have it are competitive at GPAs where a Haas or engineering applicant would not be, and applicants without it struggle regardless of grades.
Get the prerequisite sequence right early too, since Social Welfare expects social-science and statistics coursework that is easy to leave until too late.
What this means for your transfer plan
Ask yourself whether you need the bachelor's in social work or the license at the end.
If you want the undergraduate degree, apply to Berkeley and build a CSU list alongside it, because roughly 12 CSU campuses offer a BASW and several have strong local field-placement networks. A BASW can also qualify you for advanced standing in some MSW programs, which can cut a year off the master's.
If your real goal is to become a licensed clinical social worker, the major matters less than you think. Sociology or psychology at any UC, followed by an MSW, gets you to the same license, and it opens every campus rather than one.
