Which UCs Have Nutrition? Only Berkeley and Davis

Nutrition is a field where two students can pick the same-sounding major and end up in completely different careers. It is also a field where seven of the nine UC campuses have nothing at all.

The short version: two UCs offer nutrition, they are not interchangeable, and only one of them points at becoming a dietitian. Here is the honest landscape.

    Which UCs actually have nutrition?

    Two of nine.

    • UC Davis: Nutrition Science, Clinical Nutrition and Food Science. The widest nutrition catalog in the system by a distance.
    • UC Berkeley: Nutrition and Metabolic Biology, which sits on the molecular and metabolic side of the field rather than the clinical side.
    • No nutrition major: UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Merced and UC Santa Cruz. Most offer human biology or physiology majors that cover some of the same material.

So "does UCLA have a nutrition major?"

No. UCLA is the most-searched campus for this and it has no undergraduate nutrition degree. Students who want the field at UCLA generally major in Physiological Science or Human Biology and Society and take what nutrition coursework exists around the edges.

That works if your goal is medical school or research. It does not work if your goal is the RD credential, because that path runs through accredited dietetics coursework that UCLA does not offer.

    The difference that actually matters

Nutrition science and dietetics are not the same degree, and choosing wrong is the expensive mistake in this field.

Nutrition science is research-oriented. It leads toward graduate school, food industry work, public health or medicine. UC Berkeley's Nutrition and Metabolic Biology sits firmly here.

Dietetics is the professional track toward becoming a registered dietitian, and it requires accredited coursework plus a supervised internship. A graduate degree is now required for the credential as well. UC Davis Clinical Nutrition is the UC option aimed most directly at this path. Confirm the current accreditation status and requirements with the program for your application year, because these rules have changed recently and they change again.

    Can you actually get in?

Both are competitive life-science majors, and Davis in particular takes a large transfer class, which makes it a realistic target for a well-prepared applicant rather than a long shot.

The prep is the usual science stack: general biology, general chemistry, usually organic chemistry, plus statistics and often physiology. Organic chemistry and statistics are the two that most often derail a plan, because students leave them late and find the sections full. Since the sequence overlaps almost entirely with biology, it is worth checking the actual science course order from your community college so you can see whether your current schedule finishes in time.

What this means for your transfer plan

Work backward from the credential, not the course catalog. If you want to be an RD, find accredited dietetics programs first and build your list from that, which will include several CSU campuses alongside UC Davis. If you want research, medicine or public health, Berkeley and Davis are both strong and the physiology majors at other campuses stay on the table.

Either way, get chemistry started now. It is the longest sequence in the plan and everything else waits on it.

    Frequently asked questions

Which UCs have a nutrition major?

Two. UC Berkeley offers Nutrition and Metabolic Biology, and UC Davis offers Nutrition Science, Clinical Nutrition and Food Science.

Does UCLA have a nutrition major?

No. UCLA has no undergraduate nutrition degree. Students interested in the field usually major in Physiological Science or Human Biology and Society.

What major do I need to become a registered dietitian?

You need coursework from an accredited dietetics program plus a supervised internship, and a graduate degree is now required. UC Davis Clinical Nutrition is the UC option pointed most directly at that path.

Is nutrition science the same as dietetics?

No. Nutrition science is a research-oriented degree. Dietetics is the accredited professional track that leads toward the RD credential, and only some programs carry that accreditation.
