Game design is a field where California punches far above its weight and the UC system still only has two options. The good news is that both are genuinely strong, and one of them is among the best-regarded public game programs anywhere.
The short version: UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz, and the choice between them is really a choice between code and art. Here is what each one is.
Which UCs actually have game design?
Two of nine.
- UC Santa Cruz offers two routes: Computer Science: Computer Game Design, B.S., which is a full computer science degree pointed at games, and Art and Design: Games and Playable Media, B.A., which comes at it from the art and design side.
- UC Irvine offers Game Design and Interactive Media, B.S., housed alongside its informatics and computing programs.
- No game design major: Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Riverside and Merced. UCLA's Design Media Arts and UCSD's computing and arts programs touch adjacent ground without being game degrees.
So "does UCLA have game design?"
No. UCLA has Design Media Arts, which is a strong digital-media program covering interactive work, but it is not a game design degree and its prerequisites are portfolio-driven rather than technical.
This is worth being precise about, because the two paths demand completely different community college coursework. Preparing a portfolio when you needed data structures, or vice versa, is the mistake that costs a year here.
Code or art: pick before you plan your courses
This is the decision that determines everything else.
The computer science route at Santa Cruz and UC Irvine expects the full CS transfer sequence: programming, data structures, discrete mathematics, and calculus. These are real computer science degrees, and they are as competitive as any CS major at those campuses, which is to say very. The upside is that the degree is broadly employable even if you never work in games, which matters in an industry known for volatility.
The art and design route at Santa Cruz expects a portfolio and art foundation coursework instead. Less mathematics, more demonstrated visual work, and a genuinely different admission process.
Both lead into the industry. Studios hire from both. But you cannot leave the choice until after you transfer, because the lower-division requirements barely overlap.
Can you actually get in?
The computer science versions are competitive in the way CS is competitive everywhere right now, which means the full sequence finished with strong grades is close to the entry price rather than an advantage.
Because that sequence is essentially standard computer science, it is worth checking the actual CS course order from your community college before you register again. Data structures and discrete mathematics are the courses that fill first and gate everything after them, and a semester out of order pushes your application back a full year.
The art-side route is less about GPA and more about the portfolio, which is good news if your grades are uneven and bad news if you have not started building work. Start now, and build finished small things rather than unfinished ambitious ones.
What this means for your transfer plan
Decide code or art in the next month, not next year, because your entire course list follows from it. Then keep your list wider than these two campuses: several CSUs have game and interactive media programs, and a computer science degree from any campus plus a portfolio of shipped game projects is a completely normal way into the industry.
Whatever you choose, make things and finish them. In games specifically, a portfolio of small completed projects outweighs the name on the degree more than it does in almost any other field.
