A lot of financial aid for transfer students is free money that only shows up if you file the right form on time. Nobody can promise you'll get it. You won't if you never ask.

Stressed about classes too? A website like Transfermatic maps the exact classes your major needs, so you can focus on this.

    Cal Grant

Clay desk calendar with one date circled in red, for the March 2 Cal Grant deadline

Transferring from a California CC with need and a 2.4+ GPA? The Cal Grant transfer entitlement is built for you (income limits apply). At a UC it maxed at $15,588 for 2026-27, full tuition and fees. Your CC sends your GPA automatically, but check it got there.

    Middle Class Scholarship

Clay money bag tied with a pink ribbon and full of gold coins

Think your family makes too much? For 2026-27, dependent UC and CSU students with family income and assets up to $250,000 could qualify. No set amount, no extra app, and March 2 has no extension.

    Pell Grant

Tall stack of clay gold coins

Need-based, up to $7,395 for 2026-27, for citizens and eligible noncitizens. The catch: you get 12 full-time semesters of Pell for life, and CC semesters count. Don't burn them on dead-end classes. A tool like Transfermatic keeps every class pointed at your transfer.

    UC campus scholarships

Shiny clay golden ticket with a star on it

Don't skip the UC app's Scholarships & programs section. Pick every category that fits, no limit, before the app closes Nov 30, 2026. Example: UC Santa Cruz's Regents Scholarship pays transfers $5,000 a year for two years (as of Oct 2026). Some campuses want a separate app, so see how to apply to transfer to a UC.

    CSU State University Grant

Clay piggy bank with a gold coin dropping into its slot

At a CSU, it can cover your tuition, up to $6,838 a year in 2026-27, for California residents and AB 540 students with need. Funds are limited, so file by the March 2, 2027 priority date. If a Cal Grant already pays your tuition, it's reduced or canceled.

    UC Blue and Gold

Clay graduation cap in blue and gold resting on a pile of coins

Family income up to $100,000? UC says most California students there pay $0 tuition for 2027-28. No separate app: file the FAFSA or Dream Act and get your Cal Grant GPA in by March 2.

    Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship

Clay gold trophy overflowing with gold coins

The big one: up to $55,000 a year. For CC students or CC grads since spring 2022 with a 3.5+ GPA and family income up to $95,000. It closes Dec 9, 2026 and needs two recommenders. Ask this week.

    Bottom line

Three dates: Nov 30 for UC scholarships, Dec 9 for Cooke, March 2 for the FAFSA or Dream Act. Hit them and you're in line for most of this list. The rest of your calendar: UC and CSU transfer deadlines.

    Frequently asked questions

What financial aid can transfer students get in California?

The big ones are the Cal Grant (including the community college transfer entitlement), the Middle Class Scholarship, the federal Pell Grant, the CSU State University Grant, UC's Blue and Gold plan, campus scholarships, and private awards like the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship. Most of them start with one step: the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application by March 2, 2027.

Do I need a separate application for Blue and Gold or the Middle Class Scholarship?

No. Both use the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application as the only application. For Blue and Gold, UC also lists the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form, so make sure your GPA is in by March 2.

Does the Pell Grant I used at community college count against me?

Yes. Pell has a lifetime limit of 12 full-time semesters, counting every Pell dollar you've received at any school. That's why it pays to take only classes that transfer, which a tool like Transfermatic can map out for you.

If I have a 2.4 GPA and transfer from a CC, will I definitely get a Cal Grant?

Not automatically. The transfer entitlement also requires financial need, and income and asset limits apply. You also have to file the FAFSA or Dream Act Application by March 2 and have your GPA submitted. Meet all of that and you're in the running.

What's the earliest financial aid deadline for transfer students?

Nov 30, 2026, when the UC transfer application closes, including its Scholarships & programs section. Next is Dec 9, 2026 for the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship, then March 2, 2027 for the FAFSA or Dream Act.
