Through writing and analysis, the course includes post-Romantic techniques such as non-functional harmony; 9th, 11th, and 13th chords; quartal and quintal structures; and planning. It also presents 20th century techniques such as secundal and cluster structures, modality, bi-modality, tone rows, serialism, set theory, pandiatonicism, and polytonalism. Advanced rhythmic applications are also incorporated. Music majors are required to take MUSC 020D concurrent with this course. Non-majors are encouraged but not required to take MUSC 020D concurrent with this course.
