    Description
Prerequisite: Successful completion of college-level composition (ENGL C1000/ENGL C1000H/ENGL C1000E/C-ID ENGL 100) or equivalent. In this course, students are introduced to works by diverse authors and major literary genres, developing close reading and analytical writing skills. Students also develop appreciation for and critical understanding of the cultural, historical, and aesthetic qualities of literature. This is an honors course. This course reflects the department’s commitment to examine works from diverse perspectives and help students develop their authentic voices. In this course, students develop literary analysis and critical thinking skills, proficiency in research skills and literary criticism, recognition of logical fallacies, and inductive and deductive reasoning, and skill in composing writing in MLA style that synthesizes multiple sources. This is the honors version of what used to be ENGL 001B. Honors uses the pedagogical methods common to all Honors courses: trans-disciplinary, writing-intensive, collaborative, and experiential instruction. As an honors course, there is a focus on analytical writing and an emphasis on a higher degree of student participation and leadership in class discussions and other interactive teaching/learning techniques that are generally unsuitable for larger undergraduate courses.
