GPS provides possible course pathways to reach the destination of program completion Fire Technology Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement and Associate in Science Program Description This program of study was developed to assist students who desire to advance as a firefighter, or to those looking to pursue a career in the fire service field as a non-safety employee that does not require a FF1 Academy. Upon completion of the certificate, the student may become eligible for a career as a Fire Inspector or Fire Prevention Specialist. The additional completion of a general education pathway leads to the Associate degree and will aid existing firefighters in promoting/advancing through the ranks of engineer, captain, battalion chief, etc. Some fire departments require an associate degree before a captain can take the promotional exam for battalion chief. The Associate in Science can be obtained upon completion of the 18-unit major, general education requirements, and electives as needed to complete a minimum of 60 units. The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained upon completion of the 18-unit major. All courses in the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or a P if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis. Completion of this program provides the active firefighter promotional opportunities as well as a pathway to a 4-year degree. Program Outcomes Students who complete the Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement/Associate in Science will be able to: 1. Identify and comprehend laws, regulations, codes and standards that influence fire department operations, and identify regulatory and advisory organizations that create and mandate them, especially in the areas of fire prevention, building codes and ordin 2. Analyze the causes of fire; determine extinguishing agents and methods; differentiate the stages of the fire and fire development; and compare methods of heat transfer. 3. Identify and describe common types of building construction and conditions associated with structural collapse and fire fighter safety. 4. Demonstrate the ability to analyze, appraise and evaluate fire and emergency incidents and identify components of emergency management and fire fighter safety. Students will be trained according to the curriculum established by the Office of the California State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the State Fire Training Division (SFT). The curriculum will also adhere to the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This certificate will also qualify the student to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) computerized adaptive test for EMT certification. Solano Community College's Firefighter 1 & 2 Certificate of Achievement is designed as a pathway in meeting the training and educational requirements established by the OSFM, SFT and NFPA for Firefighter 1 & 2 certification and potential job employment as a professional firefighter within our region and nation-wide. The Solano Community College Firefighter 1 & 2 Certificate of Achievement can be obtained by completing the 40- unit major. All EMS courses must be completed with a minimum grade of B. All FIRE courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C or P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis. Program Outcomes Students who complete the Firefighter 1 Academy Certificate of Achievement will be able to: 1. Perform manipulate skills and pass written tests that meet the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1001 and the California State Fire Marshal standard for Firefighter 1 & 2 2. Demonstrate specific skills, knowledge and abilities in routine and emergency firefighting operations 3.
