FREN 101 Cross Age Teaching in French 3.0 Unit This class gives students the opportunity to teach basic French weekly in two local elementary schools. Students will participate in weekly seminars and explore how children learn and develop understanding in French. Working with a peer partner or partners, students will prepare lesson plans and develop curriculum. Students will work in elementary school classes in Solano County to provide language instruction based on the developed lesson plans. The French language has been a key instrument of imperialism. We will explore accompanying issues of power as they relate to race, ethnicity, class, gender, and language. (Formerly FLNG 101) World Languages Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer (ADT: A.A.-T) Program Description The Associate in Arts Degree in Spanish for Transfer is for students who intend to complete a bachelor's degree in Spanish at a CSU. Students will take courses in Spanish required for Spanish majors. This program teaches writing, reading, speaking, listening and comprehension in the target language, as well as critical thinking skills in the context of engaging and processing cultural materials, with the intent to heighten cultural awareness and sensitivity to diversity. The Associate in Arts in Spanish is fully transferable to the CSU. Students who meet the CSU's minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus, though not necessarily to a particular campus or major. With this degree you will be required to take no more than 60 semester or 90 quarter units after transfer to complete a bachelor's degree if you transfer into a program at the CSU that's similar to the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer. To earn the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer, students must: 1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: a. The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) b. A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district 2. Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 3. Complete all courses within the major with a minimum grade of C or P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis Program Outcomes Students who complete the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer, will be able to: 1. Build cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures through comparison and contrast of linguistic variances, as well as various customs, societies, and institutions. 2. Demonstrate reading, writing, and analysis in Spanish at the intermediate/high to advanced proficiency level based on the ACTFL guidelines. 3. Students will gain an understanding of the ethical and professional standards required in various professional settings with an introduction to Spanish/English Interpreting. Students that earn this certificate may be employed in any field that needs bilingual communication specialists. The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained by completing the 38-unit major. All courses within the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis. Program Outcomes Students who complete the Certificate of Achievement will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a high intermediate/advanced linguistic proficiency (reading, writing, speaking, listening) in the use of specialized vocabulary and grammatical structures applied to various community work environments. 2. The coursework presents Spanish/ English interpreting in a cross-cultural context, addressing the ethics and standards expected of a professional healthcare interpreter. Students who receive this certificate may seek employment as healthcare and community interpreters, translators, bilingual healthcare staff. The Certificate of Achievement can be obtained by completing the 39-unit major. All courses within the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or P if taken on a Pass/No Pass basis. Program Outcomes Students who complete the Certificate of Achievement will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a high intermediate/advanced linguistic proficiency in speaking, listening, and reading as applied to the use of the three modes (consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, and sight translation) in healthcare interpreting settings. 2.
