Using the lens of ethnic studies, and considering the contributions of anthropology, history, and human rights studies, we will examine both historical and contemporary Native American struggles for social justice, with a focus on social movements since the 1960s. Students will analyze these movements and Native American history through an intersectional analysis that interrogates categories of identity and power, including race, ethnicity, culture and culture change, religion, and gender. This course also explores a range of theoretical concepts and social processes, including ethnocentrism, sovereignty and self-determination, citizenship, religion and spirituality, and human rights. With an emphasis on the voices of Native American activists and writers, we will pay special attention to historical and contemporary policies that have affected Native American land use, religion, and language. The program is designed for students to develop visual skills in a variety of art media. The Associate in Arts in Studio Arts is fully transferable to the CSU. Students who meet the CSU's minimum eligibility requirements are guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus, though not necessarily to a particular campus or major. With this degree you will be required to take no more than 60 semester or 90 quarter units after transfer to complete a bachelor's degree if you transfer into a program at the CSU that's similar to the Associate in Arts in Studio Arts for Transfer. To earn the Associate in Arts in Studio Arts for Transfer, students must: 1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: a.The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) b. A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district 2. Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 3. Students may select an Emphasis which will allow deeper technical, aesthetic, and conceptual study within a specific medium: drawing and mixed media; painting; printmaking; sculpture; and ceramics. The Studio Arts Degree with Emphasis is designed for students seeking to further their study at an art school or at one of the University of California art departments. Students who earn this degree will also meet the requirements for the AA-T degree in Studio Arts, and should petition for the AA-T degree only if they plan to transfer to a CSU campus. The Associate in Arts Degree can be obtained upon completion of the 25-27-unit major, general education requirements, and electives as needed to complete a minimum of 60 units. All courses in the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C or P if the course is taken on a Pass/No Pass basis.
