Emphasis on the significance of microorganisms to human health and global ecology. Laboratory topics include traditional and modern techniques of microbial classification, recombinant DNA technology, and bacteriophage biology. Students enrolling in BIOL 4 after having taken BIOL 8A will lose credit for BIOL 8A. Not open to students that have successfully completed BIOL 8B. (CSU, UC-with unit limitation)
