    Description
NURSNG 45 and NURSNG 45L must be taken concurrently. This course utilizes Orem’s Self Care Model as a framework to assess the special needs of women and manage their health care throughout the life span. Emphasis is placed on the enhancement of critical thinking skills to promote health of the childbearing family during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. Focus is on the normal process of childbearing and newborn care and includes discussion of high-risk maternal and perinatal conditions. Therapeutic communication techniques are integrated that recognize the unique relationship of the perinatal nurse and the childbearing family. Course content builds upon previously acquired medical/surgical concepts, professional role, and leadership behaviors.
