It defines California literature and its influences on the American literary canon. Students will study and compare issues related to identity and geography, assimilation, family, class, and gender as they are reflected in the works by writers from at least four ethnic groups in the state, including but not limited to indigenous peoples, Chicanos/Latinos, European Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans.
