Transfers ToCSUDescriptionCommercial sports and media have long shared a mutually beneficial relationship. Hundreds of films have been made about sports, and television has thrived on fans' interest in watching their favorite teams, a synergy that continues today on the internet. This course examines the interrelationship between sports and media in contemporary society, exploring how this dynamic reinforces social values, challenges social norms, and reflects cultural identities related to class, race, and gender. Drawing on theories of rhetoric and social criticism, we will analyze the media's role in narrating sports stories and how these narratives shape and reinforce cultural values. Students will study various critical approaches to sports and public discourse, applying these frameworks to sports organizations, news media, and popular media. The course further explores the cultural, political, psychological, and historical dimensions of sports as portrayed in feature films and documentaries. We will analyze representations of identity, power, performance, social justice, and the body within these art forms. An emphasis will be placed on addressing the study of works of philosophical and cultural importance to understand the human condition, highlighting the influence of artistic freedom and the reflection of subjective human experiences.
