    Description
    This course allows students to learn the appropriate technique for venipuncture, arterial blood draw, and specimen collection in settings such as hospitals and out-patient clinics for a variety of diverse patient populations. This course covers proper collection of blood specimens, choice of proper equipment, venipuncture techniques, patient care, safety, infection control, circulatory system, medical terminology, patient and specimen identification, skin puncture, anatomical site selection, patient preparation, risks, complications, post-puncture care, anticoagulation care and quality assurance. Provides practical application of skills related to phlebotomy and advanced phlebotomy lecture course with a lab setting. Intended for beginning phlebotomy students working towards state certification. This course provides students with the theoretical basic and advanced knowledge and skills competencies necessary to meet California regulatory requirements for phlebotomy technicians and prepares students to take the CPT-1 examination from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Students who complete their training satisfactorily are prepared to hold a position as an entry-level phlebotomist in a physician's office, hospital, outpatient clinic, medical clinic, and other health centers. The course includes a clinical phlebotomy externship in the community consisting of at least 40 hours with 50 successful venipunctures, 10 skin punctures and observation of 2 arterial punctures. Units earned in this course do not count toward the associate degree.
