Students will explore traditional Native learning models, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, and their contrasts with Western educational frameworks. Key topics include the impacts of colonialism and federal Indian policies, Indian boarding schools, urban Native education, language revitalization, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and the development of the Native American Studies discipline. Emphasis is placed on analyzing educational disparities, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and community-driven initiatives that promote tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and student success. This course is designed for students in Native American and Indigenous Studies, as well as those interested in the history, policy, and contemporary experiences of Native American students in K–12 and higher education.
