Topics include the fire service's role in society; principles of fire behavior; firefighter health and safety; fire equipment operation and maintenance; basic fire fighting tasks and techniques; and SDFD-specific policies and procedures. The course emphasizes the requirements of the California State Board of Fire Services Certified Firefighter I training, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) standards, and Professional Qualifications (ProBoard) requirements. This course satisfies all training requirements for the IFSAC Firefighter I certification. Open enrollees are selected through the “open enrollee lottery” before each academy.
