The course focuses on the history, development, goals and current issues of the profession, an introduction to basic abbreviations and medical terminology and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). General legal and ethical principles, as well as state laws, relating to the delivery of physical therapy services are examined. The relationship of physical therapy to the health care delivery system in the United States, the settings utilized in the delivery of therapy, and an exploration of the roles and functions of the workers in the field and their part on the healthcare team are explored. This course fosters the development of communication skills, interpersonal relationships, collaboration, and professionalism required for the health care field. The need of the health care worker to develop a therapeutic presence which includes sensitivity to diversity and cultural competency are also presented.
