It includes a detailed study of compositional techniques and structure in the music of the 18th and 19th centuries. The emphasis is on further development of analysis and writing skills using chromatic harmonies including secondary dominants, secondary leading tone chords, chromatic thirds, modulations, expanded tonicization, modal borrowing, modal mixture, altered predominants and altered dominant chords. The course includes analysis and writing of two-part tonal counterpoint and the analysis of Sonata form, binary and ternary forms.
