Emphasis is placed on analyzing modern Middle Eastern historical events and processes within a global context. Topics include the historical development and role of Islam in the region, the 'decline' and dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire, imperialism, Arab independence movements, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the resurgence of Islam and the role of the United States in the region. This course is intended for history majors and all students interested in the contemporary Middle East.
