Topics include preparing to translate, analyzing meaning of ASL and English source texts, message equivalence, reformulating the message, and priorities in translation. Translation skills learned in this course serve as a foundation for future courses in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. The skills developed in this course allow students to develop message equivalence without the time pressures of consecutive or simultaneous interpreting. This is a skills-based course that is founded in translation theory. Students continue development of their ASL skills and explore intercultural communication as it pertains to the Deaf community.
