Transfers ToCSUDescriptionThis course is a study of co-occurring disorders, a condition which occurs when a person has a substance use disorder and a separate psychiatric diagnosis or other mental health-related symptoms or problems. Students learn the definitions and terms related to co-occurring disorders and the principles that guide systems of care for persons with co-occurring disorders. Emphasis is placed on identifying the most current, evidence-based practices for treating co-occurring disorders and applying screening, assessment, referral, and treatment protocols for persons with co-occurring disorders who enter substance use treatment facilities. Students demonstrate the skills necessary to apply for California state certification as an alcohol and drug counselor as they relate to treating co-occurring disorders and familiarity with the terminology, diagnoses, and treatment conditions of the mental health field. This course is intended for students in the Alcohol and Other Drug Studies program.
