The emphasis of the course is on listening to music. The course also explores past and current trends in the relationship of jazz to popular styles such as rhythm and blues, hip-hop, funk, and others. Current and historical cultural influences from African, European and Latin-American sources and their effect on jazz styles are identified and compared.
