After establishing the ancient historical context of Palestine at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean and as an early center of agriculture and civilization, this course focuses mainly on 16th century Ottoman rule to the present. The course covers the impacts of Ottoman rule, the pressures of British and French imperialism, the British Mandate over Palestine, the establishment of the state of Israel, and current Palestinian realities. Palestine's social and cultural diversity, as well as its place in the imagination of people and movements outside the region, is an important part of its history.
