The course focuses on the major social, cultural, economic, and political transformations of Asia, particularly highlighting the influence of these peoples and states on each other and the world. The course will provide students with a historical understanding of topics such as: the rise of complex societies, states, and empires across Asia; the relationship between settlement- based civilizations and the herding civilizations of Central Asia; the emergence of various philosophies, religions, and identities across Asia; Asian technology and innovations; the impact of the Mongol Empire; and the changing relationship of Asia to the wider world.
