The focus of the course will be on the history of Europe and the Mediterranean, including a general account of those political, economic, and social institutions as well as the cultural and intellectual forces that have contributed to the making of European and Mediterranean societies. The course will examine prehistoric culture, the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Students should expect to write a minimum of 3,000 words.
