Transfers ToUC and CSUCal-GETC Area 3B · IGETC Area 3B · CSU GE Area C2DescriptionThis course surveys U.S. literature (prose, poetry, drama, creative non-fiction) authored by Latino, Mexican-American, and Chicano writers. Emphasizing the historical and cultural roots of this body of literature, the course examines the contested meanings of such concepts as: Latino, Mexican- American, and Chicano identity; the relationship between social/political activism and literary expression; immigration and the border; and gender relations and sexuality within the many Latino communities. Special attention will be paid to literary forms such as the corrido, the testimonio, and the Chicano theater movement. Knowledge of some Spanish is helpful, but not required.
