This course examines the African-American vernacular and oral tradition, including folktales, spirituals, sorrow songs, and work songs. Course readings will also explore abolitionist texts, autobiographies, essays, poems, plays, short stories, and full length novels written by iconic and influential African-American authors during colonial times through the Harlem Renaissance period. Class content will be situated in historical, socio-political context as well as connected to modern day concerns about Black authorship, Black liberation, and social justice in the United States.Usually HeldMon Wed 10:30am–11:50am
