It will also satisfy the needs of students majoring in the life sciences and related areas. This course is intended for students not majoring in chemistry and not planning to take additional courses in organic chemistry beyond the CHEM 425, 426 series. Lecture topics include the preparation, properties, and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, and radical chemistry, with emphasis on applications in the biological sciences. Also included are stereoisomerism and spectroscopy. Laboratory work covers standard laboratory practices including extraction, crystallization, organic synthesis, reaction analysis, gas chromatography, thin layer chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy.
