Transfers ToCSUDescriptionDescription: A study of the social, cultural, economic, and political histories of the African continent since 1800. Because of the complexity and size of the African continent, the course does not attempt to provide a comprehensive history of each country, people, and region. Rather, it is organized chronologically and thematically, examining questions of race, gender, ethnicity, violence, environment, disease, and nationalism in the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial contexts. The course focuses the implications of European invasion and colonization of Africa, African resistance to colonization, the emergence of African nationalist movements, the establishment of independent African nations, and African nations post-colonization. 54.00 hours lecture.
