Representative writers include Bradstreet, Bradford, Franklin, Douglass, Paine, Lincoln, Emerson, Thoreau, Poe, Melville, and Dickinson. Course reading and writing assignments explore major cultural and historical themes, including the pre-colonial exploration of the Americas, Native American literary contributions, the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, transcendentalism, and romanticism.
