Topics include African origins; Triangular Traffic system and forced migration; plantations in colonial America and structural system of enslavement; participation in the American Revolution and formation of the New Republic; westward expansion; gender-specific oppression; resistance and revolt by enslaved peoples; varied experiences of enslaved peoples in house/field/urban/rural settings; anti-slavery movements; and varied roles in the Civil War. Emphasis placed on class, gender, interethnic and transnational relations. No credit if taken after ETH 061A or HIST 029A. Total of 54 hours lecture.
