Topics include African origins; Triangular Traffic system and forced migration; plantations in colonial America and structural system of enslavement; participation in the American Revolution and formation of the New Republic; westward expansion; gender-specific oppression; resistance and revolt by enslaved peoples; varied experiences of enslaved peoples in house/field/urban/rural settings; anti-slavery movements; and varied roles in the Civil War. Emphasis placed on class, gender, interethnic and transnational relations. No credit if taken after HIST 061A or HIST 029A.
