Transfers ToCSUDescriptionThis course is designed to prepare the licensed vocational nurse for entry into an associate degree nursing program and verify prior learning competencies in specialty content areas of obstetrics and pediatrics. It serves as a bridge between vocational nursing education and the expanded scope of practice of the registered nurse (RN), supporting successful transition into advanced nursing coursework. Emphasis is placed on theory and application of concepts of critical thinking, physical assessment, nursing process, disease process, and nursing skills for the care of medical-surgical, pediatric, and obstetric patients. A variety of experiences are used to broaden nursing knowledge and skills to encompass the scope of practice of the Registered Nurse. These experiences may include verbal discussion of various patient care scenarios, evolving patient case studies, simulations, and National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) practice questions. Laboratory sessions provide opportunities to refresh and validate essential RN skills such as IV therapy, head-to-toe assessments, adult, postpartum/newborn care, and pediatric dosage calculations. Students engage in reflective practice, patient teaching plans, and culturally responsive care planning to strengthen professional communication and foster leadership readiness.
