Readings include fiction, poetry, drama, short stories, and literary criticism. Compositions focus on evaluating genre traits, understanding the literary traits and themes, researching individual texts and historical contexts, exploring how wider cultural and historical contexts inform current perspectives through synthesis and interpretation, and paying attention to audience, purpose, sources as evidence, and language conventions. Writing and reading assignments encourage students to read meaningfully, to connect what they read to their everyday lives, to develop in their understandings of the human condition, and to appreciate a variety of literature as a significant lens with which to view human experience and the contributions to knowledge and society.
