Key topics include the Jim Crow period; the influential contributions of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois; the Civil Rights Movement following World War II; the Black Power Era; and the African American experience in modern America. Through these themes, the course highlights the resilience, achievements, and ongoing struggles within the African American community. Field trips to local sites may be required as part of this course, including to the African American Museum and Library in Oakland; the Oakland Museum of California; and the Museum of the African Diaspora.
