It covers structural linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, and the biocultural basis for language) and historical linguistics (the origins and evolution of language and language families, including dialects). This course also focuses on sociocultural linguistics, or how language and culture are interrelated, including language acquisition in cultural context, language loss, and language conservation.
