It examines how Latino/Latina groups arrived, formed, incorporated into, and contributed to the development of cultural, economic, political, and social systems in the United States. The course emphasizes the interconnections among social processes, group interaction, and individual identity formation. Content includes survey of the experiences of Black, Asian, and Native Americans, as they coincide with, relate to, and collectively struggle alongside the Latin American diaspora in the U.S. Through the sociology of Latinos and Latinas, the course will examine how diversity and inequality, as with national origin, culture, race, class, gender, and sexuality, shape the lives of BIPOC people and populations, and contribute to U.S. society as a whole.
