    Description
This course provides a foundational overview of the scientific study of human language, examining how languages are structured, how they function in society, and how they are acquired, used, and change over time. Students explore the major subfields of linguistics through theoretical frameworks and empirical research methods. Emphasis is placed on language as a social and behavioral phenomenon shaped by cultural norms, identity, power, and historical context. Students analyze linguistic data from a diverse range of languages and communities and investigate issues such as language variation, multilingualism, language attitudes, and language policy. Students also reflect on the ways language shapes and is shaped by human thought, culture, and community. Portions of instruction may be offered online; may also be offered fully online.
