It examines the significant incidents, laws, themes, experiences, and African Americans who helped to form American history. It addresses how African Americans have historically and now been oppressed by institutions, policies, social norms, and laws. It examines how African Americans have shaped American politics, society, and the economy, from Reconstruction to the Jim Crow era to the modern Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power Movement, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
