Focus is placed on examining crime measurement, theoretical explanations of criminal behavior, responses to crime, components of the system, how the systems work together and compete with each other, and emerging evidence-based practices in reducing recidivism. It also examines the evolution of the principles and techniques utilized by the justice systems and the evolving forces that have shaped those principles and approaches. Although justice structure and process is examined in a cross-cultural context, emphasis is placed on the U.S. and the California justice systems, specifically the structure and function of U.S. police, courts, and corrections.
