This is an honors course.<br /> This course is a survey of the political, economic, social, and cultural development of the United States from native American settlement in America through Reconstruction. Topics covered include the interaction between the indigenous peoples and European settlers in the development of the colonies, origins and consequences of the American Revolution, the development of democracy and constitutional government in America, westward expansion, the early factory system, isolationism and American foreign policy, slavery and its impact on race relations, antebellum reforms, abolitionism and sectional conflict, causes and consequences of the Civil War and Reconstruction.<br /> This course was previously known as HIS 017AH
