Transfers ToCSUDescriptionAdvisory: ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E Through this survey of protest literature, students will learn about its various forms and how authors use their works to stand up against oppression, promote justice, and shape society. Students will also learn the political and social purposes for the literary works including the abolition of slavery, the fight for labor rights, and civil rights movements. Texts will include essays, speeches, plays, short stories, books, poetry, and protest music from various genres, such as black spirituals, jazz, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, folk, hip-hop, and more. The authors and artists will reflect diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
