Description
This course examines leadership theories, core competencies, and communication strategies relevant to professionals navigating complex and high-stakes organizational environments. Students will define and apply key concepts of leadership, analyze their own leadership strengths and areas for growth, and evaluate leadership performance in real-world organizational and crisis contexts. Topics include leadership styles, ethical decision-making, team coordination, strategic planning, and effective communication under pressure. Emphasis is placed on the development of adaptable leadership traits, such as collaboration, cultural competence, and situational awareness, that are transferable across public, private, nonprofit, and governmental sectors. Students will explore how leaders communicate during organizational change, community challenges, and emergency situations. Through case studies and applied exercises, students will develop and refine their ability to craft situationally appropriate, effective, and accessible public messages across various platforms and audiences relevant to their professional roles. This course is designed for upper-division students across majors who seek to lead with confidence in dynamic, evolving environments where clear communication and inclusive leadership are essential.
