This course is a study of the Arabic language and Arabic-speaking cultures. Arabic taught in this course is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), yet references will be made to major dialects in the Arab World for comparison purposes with MSA and cultural understanding. This course will focus on intermediate level structures and readings of culturally relevant authentic materials to increase students' knowledge of Arab culture, promote awareness and understandings of Arab customs, values, attributes, and cultural diversity. Students will explore and analyze cultural differences, misunderstandings, stereotypes, and be able to explain how they contribute to Islamophobia and other misconceptions about Arabic culture. This class will facilitate language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Class is largely conducted in Arabic.
