Transfers ToNot transferableDescriptionThis course introduces students to women's studies through sociological theories, concepts, and sociological research. The course examines the status and roles of women in social institutions, social organizations, and social classes. It compares and contrasts similarities and differences in women's experiences based on race and ethnic groups, different cultures, and subcultures - with particular considerations of culturally specific notions of femininities. It is guided by sociology's emphases on cultural relativism, diversity, and the effects of inequality. Topics include institutional discrimination, gender socialization, sexuality, varied cultural influences, feminism, and regional, national, and global perspectives on women's rights.
