    Description
    This introductory course surveys major movements and historical problems in the development of the civilizations of Africa from prehistoric times to 1800. Common myths and misconceptions about Africa held by Europeans and North Americans will be analyzed and exposed. The central themes of the course include, the rise of African kingdoms and empires from antiquity to the Middle Ages, the spread of Islam and Christianity throughout Africa, the impact of slavery and the slave trade on African societies.
