Major course themes include the development and growth of slavery, the development of racial consciousness and racial ideologies, and emergence of an African-American identity. The course also explores the political, economic, demographic, and cultural influences that shaped African-American life and culture prior to 1865. The course examines the development of African-American economic, social, and political institutions and the impact these have had on American society and culture.
