The course is particularly concerned with understanding how the cultural construction of gender influenced women's lives in various times and places. Attention will be given to cross-cultural gendered encounters between European, Native American, African, and Hispanic peoples and understanding how gender intersects with other hierarchies of power, such as race, class, and sexuality. The course explores how social, political, economic, and cultural factors influenced women's experiences, and it also examines the impact of the U.S. and California Constitutions and the activities of federal, state, and local governments on the lives of women in the United States.
