How do myths from across the world serve as the foundation for larger than life stories that endure across time and culture? We'll explore how speculative literature (chiefly, science fiction and fantasy)—carries the torch of ancient myth into our present world. We will also discuss how science fiction and fantasy is uniquely positioned to create powerful metaphors and narratives that serve as thought experiments for both enduring and weighty contemporary topics such as race, gender, sexuality, free will, body image, psychology, capitalism, immigration, and family dynamics. We will be reading myths, short stories, novels, graphic novels, and watching film and selected non-fiction texts to ground our discussions.Usually HeldWed 9:35am–11:00am
