Transfers ToCSUDescriptionThis course examines the people and places of Ancient Mexico and Central America, known as Mesoamerica. The core theme focuses on trade, technology, and medicine. The study begins with the Olmec and their neighbors, moves on to the Ancient Classic Maya, and concludes with the Nahuatl-speaking peoples of the Aztec World. The lesson topics examine native food, language, science, healing, cosmology, mathematics, and the close relationships and interactions between people, plants, and animals. In addition to readings and discussions, students meet the learning outcomes through hands-on activities using clay, obsidian, and stone following the Mesoamerican craft tradition.
